What you didn't know about the Olympic games

When competing in the Olympic games most people think of athletes who runs, throws, jumps and breaks records in speed or height. It is almost forgotten that during many Olympic games there was also a competiton in sculpture. The first time the artistic events was in the Olympic programme was in the summer olympics 1912 in Stockholm. 35 artists entered the competiton.

The Swedish Winner

Gustav Nordahl was a Swedish sculptor who studied with the famous artist Carl Milles as his teacher. At the Olympic games in London 1948, Gustav Nordahl won the gold medal for his sculpture Homage to Ling. This was also the last time art competitions was part of the Olympic games.

About the picture

Pictured in the garden of his home Gustav Nordahl and his child is seen playing beneath the working copy of the winning sculpture. The sculpture was later made of bronze.
