Merry Christmas

A toy shop at Christmas. This could be just an image from a 1940s toy shop, but it's not. The small girl just tall enough to reach and see above the counter is a refugee from the horrors of World War II. She was sent by her parents in Finland to Sweden this year 1941, away from the bombings and fighting. Her Swedish foster mother Kjerstin Göransson-Ljungman has taken her shopping. Both for gifts for the girl and for the brother and sister who is left behind and surely missed. They will later make a Christmas package with gifts and food and send it home to her family. The evacuation of children from Finland was a big operation and thousands of children were in Swedish families during the war. Many never went back as there were no family to go to.

Emotional. Perhaps it's only me, but the history of the image and the fate of the little girl is moving. There is no way to imagine how and what she must have felt being so far from home at Christmas. It fills my heart with joy seeing the image of this the little girl and her big eyes looking at the toys and dolls, as she for sure will get one for Christmas. 

Christmas greetings. I wish everyone a Merry Christmas and a happy new year. My thoughts are with the children around the world, parent less, homeless, hungry and sad, and i hope that someone will find it in their hearts to take them all to a giant toy shop.
