The young man with his hands firmly on the steering wheel has his girlfriend beside and she looks like she is enjoying the moment. Driving cars today with the built in safety of the driver is not close to how driving was back in the 1950s. The cars were designers only to look good and made for comfortable driving. The main concerns was to create cars that sold and there was little or none real thoughts about driver safety.
The safety belt was in it's beginning and development, the interior and seats was designed for comfort, not preventing whip-lash effect. Of course the air-bag would not be around until another 40 years or so.
