I found new family members in Alabama
Emigrants onboard 1914. www.classicpicture.se
I found my relatives in Mobile Alabama.
The Swedish nation and many other European countries suffered greatly from poverty during the 19th century, and seeked desperately to improve the life for themselves and their families. The answer for many was emigrate to America and Canada. The land of opportunities. Word had spread about the new life there with jobs and a new way of living better.
When looking back at my family's history i have learnt some interesting facts: One of the young men just of the boat in New York, enlisted in the Union Army. He was sadly killed shortly after.
One relative has told stories about working in the slaughter houses of Chicago. A hard work it seemed.
In Bladon Springs, Alabama one of my ancestors settled and ended up owning his own riverboat.
I now have some contact on Facebook with the nice new relatives we found still living there.
Internet has changed the way to seek your roots. You can now more easily then before access information about things passed.
Comment and give my your best story of how you found your relative and where.
Have a nice weekend. Jonas
About the picture: This is the oceanliner RMS Empress of Ireland med passengers on deck when leaving Liverpool for Canada. On the Saint Lawrence river the ship collided with the Norwegian coal freighter SS Storstad. 1012 people died in the accident which makes it the worst ship disaster in Canada's history. Passengers mostly were just ordinary folks. The year was 1914.
