The Japanese singer and actor Kyu Sakamoto is probably best known outside Japan for his international hit song "Ue o Muite Arukō" (known as "Sukiyaki" in English.
When this picture was taken 1963 Kyu was the first Asian recording artist to have a number one song on the American Billboard chart.
British record company Pye Records official Louis Benjamin, made Sakamotos international breakthrough happen. He changed the title of the song to Sukiyaki, after the Japanese cooked beef dish, familiar to the English. The new title was intended to sound both catchy and distinctively in Japanese, but other than the language, it had no actual connection to the song.
On August 12 1985, Kyu Sakamoto was one of 520 people killed in the crash of Japan Airlines flight 123, which crashed into two Ridges of Mount Takamagahar in Ueno, Gunma. The airplane crash became the second deadliest single-Aircraft accident in history.
