During the Second World War he forged money and documents for the Polish resistance.
In 1956 Slania moved to Sweden where he began his employment with the Swedish postal authorities. He produced stamps for Sweden and 34 other countries around the world.
Slania was also made Royal court engraver in Sweden, Denmark and Monaco.
His work was of such recognized for quality and detail that Slania is now one of the very few famous and well known engraver names among philatelists around the world.
His 1000th engraved stamp, based on the 17th-century painting "Great deeds by swedish kings" that he made in year 2000, is in the Guinness book of records listed as the largest engraved stamp ever issued. Slania died march 17 2005.
On October 22 Master engraver Czeslaw Slania would have been 100 years old. This anniversary is something i already am part of as there is a great deal of interest in the very personal pictures of him from our archive.
