The sunken ship Vasa and it´s salvage is one of the worlds best known examples of preserving maritime history. The Swedish warship was built and ready for it´s maiden voyage on August 10 1628. After just a short voyage within Stockholm harbor, the ship was forced to the side and water entered the ship through the open lower gunports. Withing minutes it sank to a depth of 32 meters and remained there until Anders Franzén discovered it 1956.

It happened today. 

It was not until years later on April 24 1961 that the ship was ready for the final lift to the dock of Beckholmen in Stockholm. Thousands of people witnessed the ship rising above the surface.
The ship is now one of Sweden´s most popular museums.
