Tetra Pak The Beginning

A good idea made even better. In the 1930s and 40s, milk and cream cream still came in glass bottles or bought over the counter and brought home in your own milk fetcher. The Swedish dairy industry early became interested in American and German ideas of single use packaging that already was in use. The Swedish entrepreneurs Erik Åkerlund and Ruben Rausing thought of ideas to improve the food packaging especially within milk and cream products. The young engineer Erik Wallenberg at their company came up with the idea of producing a tetrahedral formed milk package from a roll of paper. The idea was to make the paper into a tube, fill it with milk and then glue the ends together to achieve the form. Harry Järund was the brain behind the machine that would make the idea work in an automated way.

On the road to success. The market and potential customers for the new package were sceptical in the beginning, but after marketing events to show the benefits both in sales and saves, sales went through the roof. The dairies began to realise the benefits and the transports became more efficient. The product also became improved by using the antiseptic plastic foam on the inside of the package. Eventually the tetrahedral shaped milk package evolved into the brick shaped package we know today. Tetra Pak is now a world leading company within the package industry.

About the pictures. Photographer Kristoffersson visits the company in the early 1950s and takes unique photographs from the early production, machines and the people involved in the development of the new product.
