One of man kinds biggest discoveries happened much by chance. Sir Alexander Fleming discovers the world saving substance penicillin 1928. A series of events and his observations in his laboratory when returning from vacation, made the discovery possible. The clever Scotsman also soon figured out the downside of bacteria being resistant against the magic drug. Now 90 years later medical science still rely upon penicillin to save lives.

About the picture. Alexander Fleming pictured at home in September 1945 by photographer Kristoffersson. The creative swede who spent three months in post-war Britain, where he met and photographed everything from famous to ordinary people, everyday life and classic scenes.
