Greta Garbo, the media shy superstar of the past. Greta Garbo, born as Greta Lovisa Gustafsson in Stockholm 1905, and became one of Hollywood's biggest stars in the 1920s-1930s. She was known for not being visible to the public and media shy. After that her career took off, she never gave any interviews or signed autographs. She never answered fan mail or attended a movie premiere.
In complete control. Garbo was in conflict over a contract med movie company Metro Goldwyn Meyer, and made no movies during two years. At last they made a new agreement that gave Garbo almost complete control over the movies she acted in. 1955 she received the Academy's Honorary Award "For her unforgettable screen performances". She had been nominated four times before but never received the award.
Early retirement. Garbo ended her own career at the age of 37 after had bad reviews from critics for her role in the movie Twins 1941. She moved to New York and lived her life alone and out of the public eye. When she walked in the streets she covered her hair with a scarf and wore big dark sunglasses. 1951 she became an American citizen. After her death 1990 her big art collection was sold for millions of dollars.
